A lot of important decisions depend on the timekeepers’ work. In reality, they determine by the fate of competitors. The slightest inaccuracy in their work can affect the outcome of the flight. This is especially frustrating when the numbers differ, and a medal is at stake.
So, what are the duties of timekeepers? They must collect, store and hand out tested engines and loads to the participants, keep logs of the flights, ensure safety regulations are followed, maintain the accuracy of the stopwatches and binoculars and quickly transfer the records to the competition secretary.
This is very physically and mentally stressful. Especially at the world or continental competitions. That is why the Federation and its general partner, Noosphere, are organizing a seminar for all potential European Championship timekeepers.

We know that many countries, holding continental and world competitions, hire inexperienced judges or even volunteers. Is this an attempt to save money?

We do not know their reasons, but we realize that it is not our way. First, there have been cases when timekeepers’ irresponsibility led to errors in the results table and mixed up the winners. Ukraine can not risk its status. All participants should leave Lviv with the feeling that the refereeing was as fair as possible. Second, there are clearly defined rules written in the statute of our Federation and the FAI Code.

And what are these rules about?

For example, they clearly define the use of binoculars; they can not be used with sunglasses. It is necessary to configure the binoculars from the center and then from the right sidelines before the launches start.
Timekeepers should only start tracking 60 seconds after the model launches. But they must keep it in sight until the end of its flight.
Sometimes the timekeeper loses sight of the rocket. But even in this case they can not look away from the binoculars. The only thing to do is to report the lose to their nearest colleague. An assistant will follow the rocket and submit a “stop” signal when the rocket touches the ground.

How many major competitions should a timekeeper participate in to be considered experienced and proven?

Experience comes through doing. The only “must have’ for a timekeeper is good vision!

What timekeepers mistakes are most critical? What should competitors and coaches do if they notice unfair refereeing or recording incorrect results?

Free flight classes results depend solely on the judges. Judicial errors occur frequently. There are many examples, but… there is a jury to settle disputes. Their decision overrules the judges.

How does the online scoring system, Cup Navigator, that was developed by Noosphere experts help judges?

My understanding of this system is that it helps the competition secretary. But if the timekeeper knows how to use Cup Navigator, it only adds to his value and professionalism. Thoughtful details and a very intuitive interface allows you to reduce the countless numbers into a single document. And what is especially valuable, is that this document will be available on all devices.
